De connected en separate index worden vergeleken met de hulp van een aantal boxplots. De middelste lijn is de mediaan. Boxplots hebben inkepingen die beginnen bij de mediaan en deze stralen uit naar buiten toe. Het einde van de inkepingen kan je beschouwen als betrouwbaarheidsinterval van de mediaan. Als je 2 boxplots vergelijkt dan moet je niet naar de mediaan kijken maar naar de inkepingen. We kijken enkel naar de verschillen waarbij de mediaan zodanig verschilt dat de inkepingen verspringen.
In dit geval overlappen de inkepingen dus de verschillen tussen groepen hebben geen betekenis. De boxplots zijn niet gevoelig voor outliers, deze liggen erbuiten.
